Katheryn Winnick: From Traditional Taekwondo to Hollywood Prime Time

Most people came to know her through her role as Lagertha in the series Vikings. Where other lead actresses would need hours of editing and stunt doubles to look convincing in action scenes, Winnick drew upon an experience built over thousands of hours of training. This is not an actress who took a few crash courses in fight choreography, but a woman who grew up inside the dojang.

Martial Arts Background and Schools

Her involvement with martial arts began in Canada at the age of 7. Her discipline and consistency led her to earn her first black belt at age 13.

Her competitive and instructional profile includes:
3rd Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo
3rd Dan Black Belt in Karate (Goju-ryu)
Silver medal at the Canadian National Taekwondo Finals.

Winnick did not limit herself solely to being an athlete. At the age of 16, she founded her first martial arts school under the name Win Kai in Toronto. By the time she turned 21, she was successfully operating three different locations, teaching Taekwondo and self-defense programs, while simultaneously completing her degree in Kinesiology at York University, gaining scientific knowledge on human body mechanics.

The Bridge to Cinema

Her entry into the entertainment industry happened organically, precisely because of her skills. Before she began landing starring roles, she worked on sets as a martial arts trainer for actors. She taught the cast proper body posture, balance, and kick execution so that their movements translated realistically on camera.

This hands-on experience with production, starting from instructing behind the scenes, eventually opened the door to her acting career.

The Self-Defense Philosophy

Even after achieving global recognition, Winnick maintains her connection to the martial arts community. Together with her brother, Adam (who is an experienced martial artist and military veteran), they created the WIN KAI Women's Self-Defense program. Their approach does not focus on sport Taekwondo aimed at medals, but on developing the right mindset and utilizing simple, tactical movements that a woman can use to escape safely from a real-world threat.

When watching her move in action series (such as Vikings or Wu Assassins), her balance, distance control, and the crispness of her strikes betray a person who has spent the majority of her life on the mat.
