Angela Mao Ying is a Taiwanese actress and martial artist, widely recognized for her roles in films such as Hap Ki Do, Lady Whirlwind, When Taekwondo Strikes, and for portraying Bruce Lee's sister in his final masterpiece, Enter the Dragon.
Angela Mao was born on September 20, 1950, in Taiwan. She is the daughter of Mao Yung-kang, a Peking Opera star who relocated from mainland China to Taiwan in 1949. Her family originally hailed from the Zhejiang province. Her real name is Mao Fu-jing. From a young age, she trained in ballet, Hapkido, and various other martial arts styles. In 1958, she joined the Peking Opera. In 1968, she made her onscreen debut in the Taiwanese film Eight Robbers (1968). In 1971, martial arts film director Huang Feng selected her as the leading lady for The Angry River (1971). Due to her exceptional acting talent and martial arts prowess, she soon became a top star for Golden Harvest, headlining classic martial arts features like Hap Ki Do (1972) and Lady Whirlwind (1972).
Hap Ki Do (1972) was the breakthrough film that brought her widespread recognition. The movie also starred Carter Wong, Sammo Hung, her real-life Hapkido instructor Hwang In-shik, as well as Grandmaster Ji Han-jae.
In 1973, she starred alongside Taekwondo Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee, Hwang In-shik, Carter Wong, and Sammo Hung in When Taekwondo Strikes (1973), a film highly celebrated for its top-tier fight choreography. During production, Angela trained in Taekwondo directly under Jhoon Rhee.
Her films had not initially been distributed in America, making her largely unknown to Western audiences until her brief but impactful 1973 role as the doomed sister of Bruce Lee's character in Enter the Dragon (1973). Following the historic global success of the film, her earlier martial arts features were widely released across America and the rest of the Western world. Although Bruce Lee passed away shortly before the film's premiere, Angela had the opportunity to train alongside him and build a close friendship during their time together.
Angela continued to release a string of successful features throughout the seventies. After her contract with Golden Harvest concluded, she returned to Taiwan and spent the next five years continuously filming Kung Fu movies. In 1978, she collaborated with Taiwanese Bruce Lee imitator Ho Chung-tao (better known as Bruce Li) in the Bruceploitation feature Return of the Tiger (1977).
Angela Mao married in 1974 and gave birth to her child in 1976. In 1992, she permanently retired from the film industry to devote herself to her family. In 1993, she relocated to New York City, where she and her family currently own and operate three restaurants.
